Bible Sexism,
Republican Chauvinism
by Michael R. Burch
Why is the Republican Party's platform so startlingly anti-woman and anti-child?
Does sexism in the Bible lead to the conservative Christian male chauvinism that
now infects the Republican Party? Yes, I believe so, and here are scads of
examples of anti-female and anti-child verses in both the Old Testament and the
New Testament. Here is a short list of
the worst passages ...
The Top Ten Evil Bible Verses
Jesus will murder children if their mothers have extramarital sex (Revelation
chapter 2, letter to the Christian churches)
Slaves must submit to masters, even masters who are harsh, so female slaves must
submit to rape. (1 Peter 2:18, Colossians 3:22)
Fathers can sell their own daughters as sex slaves. Used, unwanted female slaves can be
dumped at master's whim. (Exodus
21:2-11)
Murder captured mothers and their male infants, keeping only virgin girls alive
as sex slaves. (Numbers 31:15-18)
Stone girls to death if they can't prove they are virgins by bleeding on their
wedding nights. (Deuteronomy 22:13-21)
Murder rape victims, or force them to marry their rapists so that they can be
raped "legally" the rest of their lives. (Deuteronomy 22:22-29)
Burn daughters to death if they "disgrace" their fathers by having sex.
(Leviticus 21:9)
God gives women and little ones as spoil and plunder to be
used and enjoyed by men of God. (Deuteronomy 20:14)
Men of God can kill a girl's parents, take her as a sex slave, then discard her
if she doesn't please them. (Deuteronomy 21:10-14)
Parents should stone their sons to death if they are stubborn and/or rebellious.
(Deuteronomy 21:18-21)
Men of God "utterly destroy" woman, children, the elderly, and animals with the
edge of the sword. (Joshua 6:21)
Little ones will dashed to death against the ground, and pregnant women ripped
open by swords. (Hosea 13:16)
God turns Lot's wife into a pillar of salt for
looking over her shoulder at her home being destroyed, but does nothing to her
husband even though he offered his daughters to a crowd to be raped, then later
got drunk and had incest with them; he was called "just and righteous". (Genesis
chapter 19)
Abraham is called a man of "faith" by the Bible, but he sent his son Ishmael to
die in the desert and was willing to slit his son Isaac's throat. (Genesis
chapters 21-22)
God hardens rulers' hearts to defy him, so that he can murder multitudes of
innocent animals and children, demonstrating his power. (Exodus chapter 12)
The Bible is monstrously, murderously sexist book in a number of passages. Here
is one of the worst passages in the Bible:
Behold, I will cast her [an adulteress] into a bed, and them that commit
adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches
shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins [i.e., kidneys] and hearts:
and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. (Revelation
2:22-23)
Revelation was written by a man known as John of Patmos. He does not seem to be
writer of the gospel of John because the writing style are quite different.
According to John of Patmos, the speaker in the passage above is Jesus, and he
is talking to members of a Christian church. But who can believe that Jesus
would murder children because their mother was having extramarital sex, and what
on earth do the kidneys have to do with human behavior?
According to the Bible, the first and greatest of the Hebrew prophets, Moses,
ordered the mass murder of captured mothers and their male babies, with only the
virgin girls being kept alive, obviously as sex slaves:
And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? ... Now
therefore kill every male among the little ones, and
kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the
women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for
yourselves. (Numbers 31:15-18)
Later in Numbers 31, Moses ordered his warriors to sacrifice 32 virgin girls to
God. It is hard to say if this is further discrimination, since all the men and
boys had been killed, along with all the women who were not virgins, but it is a
horror nonetheless.
According to the Bible, God himself murders children for petty misdemeanors:
From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking up the path, some
small boys came out of the city and harassed him, chanting, “Go up, baldy! Go
up, baldy!” He turned around, looked at them, and cursed them in the name of
the Lord. Then two female bears came out of the woods and mauled 42 of the
children. (2 Kings 2:23-24)
What would a human judge and jury say about someone who assaulted and mauled 42
children for using the world "baldy"?
Here is another monstrous Bible passage:
When you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for six years; then in the
seventh he is to leave as a free man without paying anything ... [But]
when a man sells his daughter as a slave, she is not to leave as the male slaves
do. If she is displeasing to her master, who chose her for himself,
then he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners
because he has acted treacherously toward her. Or if he chooses her for his son,
he must deal with her according to the customary treatment of daughters. If he
takes an additional wife, he must not reduce the food, clothing, or marital
rights of the first wife. And if he does not do these three things for her, she
may leave free of charge, without any exchange of money. (Exodus 21:2-11)
In other words, a man can sell his own daughter as a sex slave, with the option
to buy her back if she doesn't "please" her new master. While male slaves are to
be freed after six years of servitude, a female sex slave must remain a sex
slave forever ... unless her new master tires of her. If he tires of her, he can
pass her down to his son as a sex slave. Or he can take another wife and keep
her as a "spare." If he wants to get rid of her, all he has to do is deny her
food, clothing or sex, and she can leave like a discarded dishrag, without him
paying anything for all her years of service to him.
Here is another one of the worst passages in the Bible. If a husband "dislikes"
his wife and she cannot prove that she was a virgin by bleeding on her wedding
night, he can have her stoned to death (a brutal, gruesome method of execution):
If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her and
slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I
approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” then the young woman’s
father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was
a virgin. Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to
this man, but he dislikes her. Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not
find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s
virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the
town, and the elders shall take the man and punish him. They shall fine him a
hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because
this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his
wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. If, however, the charge is
true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, she shall be
brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall
stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being
promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from
among you. (Deuteronomy 22:13-21)
Here is the third of the worst passages in the Bible. In this passage, girls who
are raped are to be either stoned to death or sold to their rapists for cash,
unless they were raped in fields where no one could hear their cries for help.
If they were not raped in fields, it is simply assumed that they "helped" their
rapists by not screaming. No thought is given to the fact that the rapists could
have gagged them, or held knives to their throats, or threatened their loved
ones, or that the girls were simply scared out of their wits. Is this the wisdom
of God, or the lunacy of primitive, barbaric male chauvinists?:
If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who
slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. If a
man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and [rapes]
her, you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to
death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and
the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from
among you. But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged
to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. Do
nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is
like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, for the man found the
young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there
was no one to rescue her. If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged
to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father
fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her.
He can never divorce her as long as he lives. (Deuteronomy 22:22-29)
Burn daughters to death if they "disgrace" their fathers by having sex.
(Leviticus 21:9)
Abraham is called a man of "faith" by the Bible, but he sent his son Ishmael to
die in the desert and was willing to slit his son Isaac's throat. (Genesis
chapters 21-22)
The people of Samaria must bear the consequences of their guilt because they
rebelled against their God. They will be killed by an invading army,
their little ones dashed to death against the ground, their pregnant women
ripped open by swords. (Hosea 13:16)
And they [men of God] utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man
and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the
sword. (Joshua 6:21)
But the women and the little ones, the
livestock, and everything else in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as
plunder for yourselves. And you shall enjoy
the spoil of your enemies, which the LORD your God has given you.
(Deuteronomy 20:14)
When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God
hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, And
seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that
thou wouldest have her to thy wife; Then thou shalt bring her home to thine
house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails; And she shall put the
raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and
bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in
unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. And it shall be, if
thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but
thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of
her, because thou hast humbled her. (Deuteronomy 21:10-14)
According to Moses, "men of God" can kill a girl's parents, then force her to
become a sex slave. Then, if the "men of God" are not happy with their sex toy,
they can discard her.
According to the Bible, both Old Testament and New, women are "unclean" when
they menstruate, and when they give birth. The state of being "unclean" is
equated with being sinful. Thus, even Mary had to make a sin offering after the
birth of Jesus!
Since according to Christian theology Jesus was perfect and his father (God) was
perfect, Mary was the only sinful, unclean member of the Holy Family. Since
there was a sin offering, it had to be for her "sin."
There are several Bible verses that emphasize women's uncleanness:
A woman who becomes pregnant and
gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is
unclean during her monthly period. On the eighth day the boy is to be
circumcised. Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her
bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the
days of her purification are over. If she gives birth to a daughter, for two
weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait
sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding. These are the regulations for
the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl. She is to bring two doves or two
pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way
the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean. (Leviticus 12:1-8)
So if a woman gives birth to a girl she is twice as unclean! If she has a boy
she can't go to church for a month, and if she has a girl she can't go to church
for two months. So ironically after Mary gave birth to the Christ Child, she was
"unclean," unfit to touch anything sacred (how did she feed the baby Jesus?),
and unable to enter a synagogue to worship God or give thanks. She had to kill
two poor birds and have a priest make atonement for her, then wait a month
before being able to enter a place of worship. What a strange way for the
Messiah to enter the world!
When a
woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will
last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening … If a
man lies with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven
days... (Leviticus 15:19-32)
So if a man touches a woman's menstrual blood, he becomes unclean!
Man born of woman …Who can bring what is pure from
the impure? No one! (Job 14:1-4 )
So the reason man are impure is that they were born to women!
In the Bible, the words "whore" and "harlot" are frequently used to describe women
who had extramarital sex. Women's bodies were
not their own, but the property of their fathers and husbands. Virginity and chastity
were mandatory for women and any girl or woman breaking the male chauvinistic moral code
was to be brutally stoned to death. Under Mosaic Law, men were permitted many wives, while women
were permitted only one husband and were subject to a test for unfaithfulness,
outlined in Numbers
5:11-31. This "test" had nothing to do with determining the truth about what
really happened, but involved the priest placing a curse on the wife, simply
because her husband had became suspicious of her, or was moved by a "spirit of
jealousy." The priest created "water of bitterness" by pouring dust into a bowl
of water. The wife was then forced to drink the dirty water while the priest
cursed her. Regardless of what happened to the woman, the husband was "free
from guilt" but the wife "shall bear her guilt."
Men could divorce their wives on a whim, according to Deuteronomy 24:1-4.
Women's main role was to bear male children and infertile women were scorned. In
the Bible it was always the women who were sterile, never the men. Great heroes
of the Bible took additional wives when their wives failed to provide them with
male children, including Abraham, the first patriarch of the Israelites.
According to the Bible, women were inferior and subservient to men. Even in the
New Testament, they were to keep their hair covered as a sign of submission to
male authority:
For man did not come
from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for
man. For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign
of authority on her head. (1 Corinthians 11:9-10)
…women should remain silent
in churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission ...
(1 Corinthians 14:34)
Wives submit to your husbands, as is fitting to the Lord. (Colossians
3:18)
In the bit of convoluted logic below, Paul (or someone pretending to be Paul)
claims that it is so shameful for a women to reveal her hair, that she should
have her head shaved rather than reveal her hair. A man can reveal his hair
because he is the "likeness and glory of God" because he came first. But a woman
is inferior and subservient because she came after man. Of course the writer was
under the assumption that there really was a perfect garden of Eden, and that
man was created "perfect" until Eve messed everything up. But today we know that
there never was a garden of Eden, that man did not "come first" and that Eve
didn't really eat "the forbidden fruit" and cause man to "fall." Can anyone
really believe that this bit of nonsense is "the wisdom of God":
I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ. The head of the woman
is the man. And the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies
with his head covered brings shame on his head. And every woman who prays or
prophesies with her head uncovered brings shame on her head. It is just as if
her head were shaved. What if a woman does not cover her head? She should have
her hair cut off. But it is shameful for her to cut her hair or shave it off. So
she should cover her head. A man should not cover his head. He is the likeness
and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. The man did not come
from the woman. The woman came from the man. Also, the man was not created for
the woman. The woman was created for the man. That's why a woman should have her
head covered. It shows that she is under authority. She should also cover her
head because of the angels. (1 Corinthians 11)
Genesis 3:16-19 says that God punished Eve by inflicting labor pains on her at childbirth,
forcing her to desire her husband Adam, and allowing Adam to "rule over"
her. In verses 17-19, we learn that Adam's punishment was that he would
sweat when he worked. Eve's punishment was clearly more more severe than
Adam's.
In Genesis 19, another hero of the Bible named Lot stresses the lesser value of women
in a vile way. Two men come to visit Lot and he insists that they stay
at his house for the night. Not long passes before "all the men from every part
of the city" surround Lot's house, demanding that he release the men to be
raped. Being a man of God, Lot answers the door and pleads for
the mob to accept his two daughters instead of the men:
Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring
them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything
to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof. (Genesis
19:8)
God turns Lot's wife into a pillar of salt for
looking over her shoulder at her home being destroyed, but does nothing to her
husband even though he offered his daughters to a crowd to be raped, then later
got drunk and had incest with them; he was called "just and righteous". (Genesis
chapter 19)
The Bible sets the monetary value of a man higher than that of a woman in
Leviticus 27:1-7.
Women who wear men's clothing are detestable to God, according to Deuteronomy
22:5.
I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the
beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I
write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father. (1 John
2:13)
No mention is made of women in the verse above.
When King David sinned by having Uriah killed on the battlefield and committing
adultery with his wife Bathsheba, God stated that David's multiple other wives
would be raped in broad daylight as a consequence (2 Samuel 12:11-12). The
rapist turned out to be David's own son Absalom, per chapter 16,
verse 22. Such a simple punishment apparently wasn't enough for Yahweh though,
as he also decided to kill the son David and Bathsheba conceived in their
adultery (verses 14-18). Understandably distraught by the whole situation,
Bathsheba grieves and David consoles her by sleeping with her and getting her
pregnant again (verses 24-25). Perhaps children are replaceable in the eyes of
God, or is it in the eyes of primitive barbarians?
Considering the story of Eve once more, we find interesting sentiments from the
apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 2:14-15: "And Adam was not the one deceived; it was
the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through
childbearing - if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety."
Like I stated before, both Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and the definition of sin
in Christianity is disobedience to God. How Paul concludes that Eve, and not
Adam, was the sinner and the one deceived is unknown to me, but the preceding
verses might give some hints. "A woman should learn in quietness and full
submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man;
she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve." -1 Timothy 2:11-13
These oppressive and demeaning teachings are expressed in Paul's other epistles
too. 1 Corinthians 11:3 explains that "the head of every man is Christ, and the
head of the woman is man". Men answer only to Jesus, but women answer to Jesus
and to men. In verses 5 and 6, Paul also commands that any woman who prays or
prophesies with her head uncovered should have her hair shaved off. Men are
exempt from this though, since they are "the image and glory of God", while the
woman is merely the "glory of man" (verse 7). Verse 10 notes that one reason for
women to cover their heads is because of the angels. Women must be modest so
they don't tempt God's angels? Instruction is given to women to be silent in
church in 1 Corin. 14:34-35, and they are only allowed to ask questions to their
husbands at home after church.
Paul is not the only apostle or character in the New Testament to utter
misogynistic ideas though. The disciple Peter stressed, in 1 Peter 3:1-7, that
women are the "weaker vessel", that they should be "in subjection" to their
husbands, and they should dress modestly without braided hair or gold jewelry.
Luke 2:22 tells us that Mary the mother of Jesus had to undergo purification
rites after giving birth... to the son of God. Verse 23 mentions that firstborn
males are to be consecrated to the lord, and there is of course no mention of
firstborn females. The apocalyptic book of Revelation contains lots of strong
negative imagery involving women too, such as the whore of Babylon and Jezebel
the prophetess.
After God killed Er, Judah tells Onan to "go in unto they brother's wife." But "Onan
knew that the seed should not be his; and ... when he went in unto his brother's
wife ... he spilled it on the ground ... And the thing which he did displeased
the Lord; wherefore he slew him also." (Genesis 38:10)
God kills men for not having sex with their brothers' widows?
After Judah pays Tamar for her services, he is told that she "played the harlot"
and "is with child by whoredom." When Judah hears this, he says, "Bring her
forth, and let her be burnt." (Genesis 38:24)
Judah, the patriarch of Judah, King David and Jesus Christ, had a woman burnt
for playing the harlot, when he was the one who paid her to have sex with him.
